DENISE LAING LIVES IN AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND AND HANDCRAFTS CONTEMPORARY STERLING SILVER JEWELLERY DESIGNS FROM HER HOME WORKSHOP.

THE PLEASURE OF MAKING COMES FROM EXPERIMENTING WITH MATERIALS TO BRING AN IDEA TO LIFE, AND BY USING SIMPLE TECHNIQUES TO CREATE ELEGANTLY BOLD FORMS.  SHE SELDOM BEGINS WITH A FIRM IDEA OF WHAT THE FINAL DESIGN WILL BE AND PREFERS TO LET WORKS COME TOGETHER ON THE WORKBENCH AS ELEMENTS COMBINE THROUGH PROXIMITY, ASSOCIATION AND CHANCE.  THE DECISIONS ABOUT SCALE, TEXTURE AND FORM, HOW THE PIECE WILL BE WORN, AND WHETHER IT WILL BE FIXED OR FLUID ARE ANSWERED DURING THIS PROCESS OF EXPERIMENTATION AND PLAY.

CURRENT WORKS FEATURE REPETITION OF GEOMETRIC COMPONENTS INTO STRUCTURES EXPLORING FORM AND SPACE.  TECHNIQUES SUCH AS ‘BLEACHING’ AND ‘OXIDISING’ ARE SOMETIMES USED TO ALTER THE COLOUR OF THE FINISHED PIECE.

SOME PIECES ARE EMBELLISHED WITH DELICATE ELEMENTS OF DECORATIONS.  OFTEN THIS IS THE ADDITION OF A TEXTURED SURFACE OR COMPONENT, OR A SPECIAL LINK THAT DRAWS YOUR ATTENTION.
