Cheryl Wright

 artist & curator

cheryl wright’s art is an extension of her deep love for nature.  a multi-media artist, she works primarily with hard materials—such as corten steel, copper, and ceramics—while striving to create forms that appear soft and organic.  her work encourages viewers to reconnect with nature, fostering a sense of respect and a desire to protect it.

cheryl has been exhibiting regularly since 2006, participating in numerous group exhibitions across the country, as well as holding a well-received solo show at satellite gallery in 2009.  her passion for colour is evident throughout her work, as she explores the emotional impact of different hues—some uplifting and energizing, others evoking a sense of tranquility and contemplation.

her creative journey began with a diploma in advertising & display, which led to years of working as a display artist in the fashion industry.  in 2005, she pursued part-time study under practicing artists matthew browne and kathryn stevens at what is now the browne school of art.  this period marked the transition into her independent art practice, which has since expanded into large-scale sculptural works.

for the past 13 years, cheryl has been the owner of art industry, a gallery in clevedon village, which she runs alongside her artistic practice.  in 2021, she took on a curatorial role, organising and overseeing the huakaiwaka indoor gallery for the biannual sculpture in the gardens exhibition at the auckland botanic gardens.

more recently, cheryl has expanded her practice to include ceramic-based wall sculptures, further blending her love of materiality with organic forms.  whether through steel, copper, or clay, her work continues to invite connection—to art, to colour, and ultimately, to the natural world.
