GEOFF RANKIN

geoff rankin was born in scotland, educated in south africa then moved to sydney, australia in the early ‘60s and was accepted into the national art school where he found “the third dimension”.  then moving on to the south australian school of art where he started welding.

his early artistic career, after art school was in metal sculpture.   some of his pieces were accepted for exhibition by the mildura sculpture and transfield sculpture prize committees.  both committees selected works from the best australian and new zealand works submitted.

geoff organized an australia wide sculpture competition.  this event was held during the adelaide festival of art.  geoff’s work was shown in the sculpture court in the kim bonythan gallery in adelaide.

in the early seventies geoff and his wife judy moved to new zealand.  finding the art scene very quiet the next several years were spent making a living.

geoff returned to sculpture seriously.  firstly working obsidian, then big lumps of kiln glass, cutting and shaping them on a large diamond saw then grinding, sanding and polishing.   each piece is unique, looking for pure form.  works often don’t have a formal base and can be shown several ways.  equally at home with geometric or organic forms, a good number of works have three complimentary pieces.

geoff likes working on his own exploring new ideas and giving his work an individual look.

he was an exhibiting artist in the 2023 sculpture on the shore exhibition.
